“Botan Coffee” is set on the ground-floor space of a recently revitalised community in Taipei, Taiwan. The interior, dressed in a black modern style that creates a subtle yet mysterious ambience, was created by Joseph Lee of Leechen International Design, who drew inspiration from the owner’s grandfather’s peony tattoo. This tattoo symbolised bravery, and its influence is almost palpable around the cafe, creating quite an evocative and sentimental atmosphere.
The interior boasts a double-height loft layout drenched in natural light from expansive French windows that accentuate the space’s dimensions. The black colour scheme is enhanced by a variety of materials, which give the space a textured, layered effect. The floor’s combination of diagonal squeeze pebbles and wooden floorboards, plus the bar area’s three shades of grey and wave-shaped designs, add depth and character to the space, completely setting the mood for a nice glass of wine.
Outside, peony motifs were integrated into the design, reminding guests and employees of the story behind the cafe. The furniture, minimalist in style, is complemented by a light-coloured wooden staircase and a strategically placed tea mirror, which are subtly illuminated by indirect lighting.
Incorporating the peony as a central element of the cafe symbolises the beauty of life and the importance of family, but it also conveys qualities of trustworthiness, pride, nobility, and anticipation, making this cafe as welcoming and interesting as the owner’s grandfather.
