Located in the enchanting coastal town of Sandnes on Norway’s west coast, this apartment, designed by Gudbjørg Simonsen, presents itself as a beautiful oasis in an established villa area. Gudbjørg’s innovative and visionary approach to interior architecture infuses every corner of this exclusive unit, one of three in an apartment villa that sits atop the sophisticated building.
The owners, a wonderful and active couple from the area, wanted to move from a large detached house to a more maintenance-free apartment that was still close to the city’s vibrant offerings and activities.
The apartment boasts outstanding views from all four sides, which is a rare quality in today’s apartments. Almost all living spaces have daylight coming in from two sides. In the center of the apartment are rooms that do not have the same need for daylight but form a tranquil core at the center of the floor plan. This core is clad in light wood and integrated with beautiful design elements such as the kitchen, fireplace, and wardrobes to highlight it as a focal point in the layout.
The corridors around the core are spacious and open, without doors that close, allowing daylight to flow through the apartment from all sides, and avoiding a sense of narrow corridors. Elements such as chests of drawers and small niches are discreetly integrated.
On one side of the apartment, you find the guest suite with its accompanying bathroom, while the master suite with the main bathroom is located on the other side. The kitchen and living room form an open solution and have direct access to the terrace.
Natural and warm materials have been used in the project. The doors are custom-designed and are an important design element. In this apartment, the repeating lines and integration of natural materials create a rhythm and harmony that is not only visually appealing but also creates a good atmosphere. Architect Petter Aase has designed the place to create close bonds among the residents, and from this residence, one can enjoy a spectacular view of Sandnes city.
