Anyone who has visited Bali knows the island is a treasure trove of experiences, from opulent hotels and lavish villas to charming bungalows and lively beach clubs. While the luxury market here can often feel repetitive, today’s featured retreat stands out for its distinctiveness and originality. Take a look inside 8Sun Resort which skillfully combines elements of a luxurious retreat with minimalistic notes of Bali.
Designed by MAKHNO Studio in collaboration with SAI ARCHITECTS, 8Sun resort is set to be on the coastal cliff amid the jungles, with a magical view of the Indian Ocean opening from every single room in the hotel.
This picturesque resort will consist of the Activity House and the Rest House. As the name suggests, the Activity House is designed as a space for more productive travelers and guests, as it includes a co-working space, conference hall, bar-restaurant, celebration hall, spa, relaxation area, large terraces, and a pool. The Rest House, on the contrary, is an ideal choice for those seeking privacy and comfort—offering villas and hotel rooms to choose from. Surrounded by terraces, relaxation niches, observation decks, swimming pools, and lush green spaces, both structures create an inviting environment.
Designed as a multi-level hotel, 8Sun is planned to feature three floors with rooms of varying sizes—starting at 70 m² on the top floor, and decreasing to 50 m² and 30 m² on the lower floors. Despite the size differences, each room is set to showcase a rounded floor plan and will be adorned with light clay plaster and rounded, soft furnishings. The design will incorporate a lot of white and earthy tones, complemented by Balinese elements such as vine lamps, woven rugs, and wooden decor, paying homage to the island’s aesthetic. The largest rooms are expected to offer separate living and bedroom areas, and will include ceramic sinks by MAKHNO.
Throughout the hotel, guests will notice design elements such as open corridors and passages between rooms, adorned with handcrafted DIDO ceramic art sculptures.
In addition to its hotel rooms, 8Sun will feature two 184-square-meter luxury villas designed for larger groups seeking a more private retreat. These villas will offer seclusion with their own private pools and separate outdoor spaces, ensuring a tranquil environment away from other guests. The interiors will be as splendid as the hotel rooms, if not more so, furnished with luxurious rounded beds by MAKHNO, striking ceiling lamps by KHMARA, CHOVEN, and THE POLAR NIGHT, handcrafted ceramic sinks and vats by Ukrainian artisans, and a spacious dining table on the terrace for large gatherings.
To complement the breathtaking view of the ocean and picturesque nature of Bali the design team chose stone, ceramics, and wood with a few glass elements for the project’s finishing materials, emphasizing the natural look of the resort.
“8SUN is a place of love. It was created with love for those who cultivate love on this island of love. What could be more beautiful?” MAKHNO Studio said in their statement. It’s no surprise, then, that they take love so seriously that they’ve designed a dedicated rooftop wedding terrace atop the administrative building, featuring ceramic furniture that enhances the architectural charm of the exterior.
With its terraces, relaxation niches, observation decks, swimming pools, and lush green spaces, 8Sun invites you to escape your daily routine and fully embrace the island’s serene beauty. Guests can dine at a restaurant featuring a charming outdoor terrace or host larger gatherings—whether weddings or business meetings—in a grand 1,000 m² conference hall seamlessly integrated into the rock.
In keeping with Bali’s reputation for retreats and mindful escapes, 8Sun includes a state-of-the-art fitness room designed for yogis and fitness enthusiasts alike. Surrounded by Balinese vine accents and offering sweeping panoramic ocean views, this space promises a tranquil environment for rejuvenating both body and spirit.
