The Grand Wing Premium Gaming Club is a multifunctional space within one of Manila’s most well-known resorts. It was designed to offer guests the freedom to choose what to do in the space: dining, lounging, or meeting someone. The lighting design, developed by Light Plan Inc., recently won a prize at the LIT Lighting Design Awards due to how the designers applied layered illumination techniques to ensure both functionality and comfort in the space.
The Club is divided into three main sections: the dining area, the lounge, and the meeting rooms. Despite each having a clear purpose, the open-plan layout required a lighting strategy that would unify the space without any sharp contrasts or clear visual separation. The solution was achieved through a coordinated mix of ambient and accent lighting, which the designers hoped could emphasize the area’s comfort and visual appeal.
Most of the lighting uses DALI dimmable fixtures set at 2700 Kelvin to ensure a warm, inviting atmosphere throughout the space. Key highlights, such as display shelves and showcases, are illuminated at 3000 Kelvin to draw attention to specific elements without overwhelming the environment. Furthermore, downlights with narrow beam angles are strategically placed above dining tables to focus on the food served and act as a smooth separator, allowing guests to have intimate dining experiences.
To avoid unwanted reflections and glare, special attention was given to millwork with reflective white surfaces and custom detailing to ensure that lighting sources were concealed while still providing the perfect illumination for displays. Display shelves, spanning from floor to ceiling, were lit with high-color-rendering, medium-beam downlights to showcase artworks and sculptures effectively. This setup guarantees both accurate color representation and appropriate lighting intensity without creating any discomfort for the guests.
The interior design, created by Hirsch Bedner Associates, has a contemporary palette of dark, elegant finishes as a base. The lighting design complements the textures and materials used throughout.
