Three Tables, Zero Waste: ZERØ Brings Fashion-inspired Sustainability to Furniture Design

Header: Sarakele Studio and Moa Woodman

The collaboration between Studio Sarakele and Moa Woodman began with an accidental encounter at a furniture fair. Rather than cutting new trees, they decided to give new life to trees that had fallen due to disease or natural disasters such as floods and storms. That’s how the ZERØ table collection was born.

Responsible approach

A value-driven approach by Woodman and Sarakele Studio involved turning existing trees into beautiful, functional furniture. Instead of cutting new trees, they used materials provided to them by nature. That way, wood waste that would normally become firewood has been transformed into beautiful furniture.

Zero-waste production

As its name suggests, the collection was made with zero-waste techniques. Following the production method used in the fashion industry, the tabletop and legs are made from the same board. Inspired by pebbles on the seashore, the collection features simple forms and a calming, balanced visual presence. Inspired by organic shape, the tables are as practical as they are beautiful. The collection includes various tables, such as coffee and dining tables, in a variety of sizes.

Made of solid wood ash, elm, and oak, with walnut and chestnut also available, the designers plan to create smaller objects to add to the collection. Using the remaining wood to create mirrors and cutting boards will ensure no wood goes to waste. Designed to fit both residential and public spaces, the collection is easy to assemble, transport, and can be adjusted to users’ needs.

Zero 1

An oval dining table that can accommodate four to six people, titled Zero 1, is inspired by the rounded shape of an oval stone. T-shaped curved legs support the natural surface, which is treated with wax, oil, and hardener. Made of ash and oak, the table measures 144 x 104 x 76. Easy to assemble, the table comes in three parts, flat-packed in a box.

Zero 2

The next table in the collection is called Zero 2. Also accommodating four to six people, the table is inspired by a round stone. Supported by cross-shaped, curved legs, the table is made of ash and oak. Somewhat smaller, the table measures 113 x 109 x 76 and can be easily assembled from 3 parts.

Zero 3

The smallest table of the bunch, Zero 3, measures 77 x 77 x 76, which is enough room for up to 4 people. Like its larger cousin, Zero 2, the table features a rounded shape and a cross-shaped curved support. Assembled from three parts of ash and oak, the table is treated with oil, wax, and hardener.

The inspiration for creating the Zero collection came from the natural world and from a deeply personal place. By turning discarded wood into lovable pieces of furniture, the designers embarked on a personal journey to reassemble broken pieces of their lives into something beautiful, harmonious, and valuable.
