The Latest Jordan I Mid Subway is The Students’ Tribute to NYC’s Unsung Heroes

The Jordan Wings Design Program, an initiative launched in 2015 to help young people reach better educational opportunities, presents the latest release Jordan I Mid Subway. Designed by NYC’s young students, it is a tribute to the city’s unsung heroes—the staff of the MTA, the largest public transit system in North America.

Students from multiple cities in the US, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, N.C., Philadelphia, and more had to compete against each other when pitching their designs, as only one would go into production. For six weeks over 130 high school students had a chance to work closely with the Jordan Brand product-creation team to design an Air Jordan I centred on the theme of “role models.”

However, there could be only one winner. The winning design of Air Jordan I Mid Subway was released on May 14 exclusively in grade school, preschool, and toddler sizes on Nike’s official webstore, at Nike House of Innovation NYC, and at Nike Soho.

“I feel so proud thinking about the people who will be wearing and enjoying this shoe. Now I know what it must feel like when musicians hear their songs on the radio for the first time.”

The limited-edition Air Jordan 1 Mid at first glance seems similar to Jordan’s other gray sneakers. However, upon closer inspection, you can spot its unique and quirky features.

For example, the text on the toe of the shoe states “Always Go Forward” a tribute to the mindset of the crews who move NYC along, even through difficult times. “Thank You For All You Do” appears on the backside of the tongue, as a thank-you note to the MTA crew who tirelessly help New Yorkers reach their destination. On the quarter, you will find the ironic “Do Not Lean On The Doors”. Finally, on the back of the shoe, you may spot “WINGS” written in the MTA lettering.

Last but not least playful detail in the design is colourful speckles scattered throughout the outsole and sock lining of the Jordans. In contrast to the two grey tones of the sneakers, this detail makes Jordan I Mid Subway more outstanding. What’s even more important, it is entirely waterproof, allowing the sneaker wearers to not worry about comfort no matter the weather.
