When design draws from a joyful, common memory, it creates an immediate connection. This is the principle behind the Tang Hulu Floor Lamp from Matrix Design. Conceived by the lead designers at Msol Studio, the lamp earned a win in the Decorative Accent Lamps category at the 2024 LIT Lighting Design Awards for its unique approach. This piece moves beyond simple illumination, offering an interactive experience that brings a sweet taste of childhood into the modern home.

A sweet source of inspiration

For many, the name Tang Hulu brings back memories of a popular street food: bright red hawthorn fruits coated in a crackly, clear sugar glaze, all skewered on a thin bamboo stick. The designers at Msol Studio tapped into this specific, joyful image to create the lamp’s form. They wanted to make that happy memory a visual part of a person’s living space. The lamp uses creamy white glass to represent the candy-coated fruits and a clean metal structure for the “stick.” The result is a lamp with an interesting, modern style that feels personal and approachable, reducing the distance between people and the objects in their homes.

Built for your life, not just your room

What sets the Tang Hulu Floor Lamp apart is its adaptable nature. Msol Studio created it to be a multi-functional and interactive piece of home decoration rather than just a fixed light source. The lamp features three separate glass bulbs, each of which can be detached from the main structure. This allows you to completely change the lamp’s function and appearance based on your needs. For a cozy evening reading a book or enjoying a glass of wine on the floor, a single light bulb provides the perfect amount of low-level light. When friends are over for a conversation, you can attach two bulbs to create an ambient glow at a height that matches most large furniture, like sofas and armchairs. This control is further improved with a step dimming feature, putting the idea of “customize light” directly into your hands.

Smart details from top to bottom

Every part of the Tang Hulu Floor Lamp has been carefully considered. The base that holds the lamp is a triangular cone. This shape was chosen specifically to provide a visual counterweight to the glass spheres above it, creating a sense of equilibrium. Beyond its appearance, the cone-shaped base has a practical advantage: it takes up very little floor space. This small footprint means the lamp can fit into a room easily and be an interesting addition without getting in the way. It is an innovation in home lighting that shows how design can be fun, functional, and full of personal meaning.
