Soar with Storks for a Bird’s-Eye View of a Hidden Croatian Wetland

Imagine soaring alongside majestic storks, their wings brushing the air currents as you gain a breathtaking bird’s-eye view. This isn’t a dream, but a reality at Croatia’s Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, the largest protected wetland not only in Croatia but the entire Danube basin. Here, nestled amidst a landscape teeming with biodiversity, lies the “Roda” observation deck, a unique structure designed by roth i čerina. This unique structure, designed by the architectural firm roth i čerina, offers visitors breathtaking views of the park’s marshlands and rich biodiversity.

Nestled on a hilltop, the “Roda” observation deck’s wooden construction seamlessly blends into its natural surroundings. Inspired by the shape of a stork’s nest, the park’s symbolic bird, the observation deck becomes part of the ecosystem, attracting birds to its shelter.

The structure consists of three platforms at different levels, accessible by a spiral staircase. This design allows visitors to enjoy panoramic views from various perspectives. The platforms are equipped with educational boards informing visitors about the park’s flora and fauna.

The architectural design is credited to Mia Roth and Tonči Čerina of roth i čerina, with collaboration from Larisa Čišić, Luka Fatović, and Karla Jelić Balta. Product design comes from Vedran Kasap and Ozana Ursić of Clinica studio, while graphic design is the work of Niko Mihaljević. Illustrations were created by Franka Tretinjak.

The structure’s statics were designed by BB Structuralis, and construction was carried out by Binđo + Vios + Pegra and Primat RD.

The “Roda” observation deck is a remarkable example of where functionality meets aesthetics. It not only offers a unique nature-viewing experience but also educates visitors about the importance of preserving Lonjsko Polje. This project is a significant contribution to the park’s touristic offerings, attracting new visitors to this magical region.
