Snow Park: Ice and Snow in One of China’s Sourthern Cities

Header: Kris Lin International Design

Snow Park is an exhibition centre in Shenzhen, China, designed by Kris Lin International Design, with Kris Lin as lead designer and Anda Yang on the design team, in collaboration with SEED Design. Most recently, the project has been one of the jury’s favourites in the “Interior Design – Exhibition/Gallery” category at the BLT Built Design Awards.

The world’s largest indoor ski resort

Snow Park was born to support Shenzhen’s ambitious project of building the world’s largest indoor ski resort, Shenzhen Qianhai HuaFa Ice and Snow World, an interesting goal as the city is described as China’s southernmost urban hub. Snow Park is therefore positioned as the exhibition centre for that development, working as a platform for showing ice and snow culture alongside urban innovation.

The designers focused on the brief “Ice + Light + Art” to complete the project, having also included a commercial side. Snow Park is designed to transition from an exhibition centre to a commercial hotspot, cementing the space as an important part of the city’s economic and operational life.

Ice and Snow adventure

The inspiration behind the design came from a documentary about a Chinese explorer’s glacier expedition; hence, Snow Park is organised around six different scenes: Snow Cliff, Blue Ice Cave, Ice Sky Light, Ice Spire, igloo and Snowflake. These scenes form an “Ice and Snow Adventure”, with the glacier expedition documentary as the starting point, and use that reference to link the project to the idea of natural exploration while in an impressive modern setting.

A mix of materials and tech

The designers used three main materials and technologies to achieve their goal: GRG, Ice Jade Stone and “Holographic Tech”. The first, GRG, is a lightweight, highly mouldable material used to form the flowing wall surfaces, where the ability to hold precise curves was a must. On a sustainable note, GRG is also recyclable, helping reduce construction waste and abiding by green building standards. Ice Jade Stone, on the other hand, is translucent and durable, having been selected to evoke ice and snow.

On the technology side, the Holographic Tech is a projection used alongside LED screens and dynamic lighting. The designers chose to include this technology to be able to build multi-layered visuals fitting for the snow theme, steering clear of basic static displays.
