Seoul Unveils World’s First Audio Museum by Kengo Kuma

Designed by KKAA (Kengo Kuma & Associates), the Audeum (Audio Museum) is the world’s first audio museum, and it goes way beyond the traditional museum concepts. The museum provides the unique opportunity to see, and experience sounds firsthand.

Additionally, the museum isn’t just a place to listen to sounds. It is an architectural instrument that returns us to our natural state, allowing us to experience the five senses of the body, namely sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch.

This is a place that goes beyond a museum. It provides a special healing and sensory experience. It is destined to become a symbolic place of the new era.

The exterior uses vertically overlapping aluminium louvers to create changing shadows, where light and shadow meet between the louvers, producing a beautiful effect like sunlight in a forest. The use of aluminium pipes mimics the changes in natural light, randomly arranging the pipes to harmonize natural disorder and order. This also emphasizes the beauty of light that changes based on the time, the weather, and the season.

Furthermore, the bright aluminium pipes envelop the entire building, allowing the exterior to show new expressions according to the seasons, incorporating the random characteristics of the urban environment and nature into the architecture.

The interior of the exhibition rooms uses wood. Therefore, it adopts a detail called ‘wood drape’, which differs from typical wood finishes, emphasizing the softness and naturalness of the wood.

The aluminium exterior transitions into the soft wood interior in ways that create a gradual shift from outside to inside. The wood finish is designed with acoustics in mind. This creates a space that stimulates the human senses and fosters a sense of closeness to nature.

Constructed by KCC Corporation and illuminated by LPA – Lighting Planners Associates, the Audeum is an architectural marvel that offers new personal experiences.
