A New Chapter for Royal Copenhagen Begins with Interior Art Objects

Royal Copenhagen Marks 250 Years with Sculptural Porcelain for the Home

To mark its 250th anniversary, Royal Copenhagen takes a bold, elegant step beyond the dining table. Known for generations of exceptional tableware, the Danish porcelain house now turns its attention to interior design with the launch of Kontur. This sculptural collection feels as fluid as the ocean that inspired it.

Unveiled during 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen, Kontur reimagines porcelain with a contemporary twist: four meticulously crafted pieces—a vase, a dish, a bonbonniere, and a limited-edition lamp—each carrying the rhythm and depth of moving water.

“With Kontur we wanted to explore a more playful and organic way of working with porcelain than we usually do. Working with our craft and expertise to create a new expression, building a world of porcelain beyond tableware,”
Jasper Toron Nielsen, Creative Director of Royal Copenhagen

Blending centuries-old craftsmanship with modern precision, Kontur reflects Royal Copenhagen’s signature balance of heritage and innovation. The pieces are brought to life through hand-sprayed underglaze techniques that build layers of blue reminiscent of ocean waves—echoing the brand’s iconic three-wave mark, symbolizing Denmark’s waterways.

“Centuries old techniques and modern technology were used to create this collection, including Royal Copenhagen’s signature underglaze spray-painting technique, used to adorn the porcelain and create the rich depth in the design,”
Jasper Toron Nielsen

Each piece in the collection tells its own story:

  • The Vase rises like a whirlwind or a growing tree, its wide base and narrow top perfect for bold floral arrangements.
  • The Bonbonniere is quietly magical, hiding its opening beneath hand-sprayed blue waves—each one unique.
  • The Dish captures a moment of motion in porcelain, designed to elevate even the simplest object it holds.
  • And The Lamp, limited to just 250 numbered pieces, is a showstopper: a soft, undulating base paired with a minimalist shade that creates a dramatic dance of light and shadow.

“With Royal Copenhagen’s deep-rooted connection to the ocean and our iconic blue hues, Kontur emerges as a natural extension of this heritage, adding depth and a playful twist to our universe,”
Jasper Toron Nielsen

Kontur is a poetic celebration of craftsmanship, legacy, and form.
