Nike World Headquarters’ New Origami-inspired Bridge

Header: PLACE

Designed by PLACE with Mauricio Villarreal as lead designer and built by Mortenson for Nike, the Shoe Dog Bridge was created as a direct and layered connection between different areas of the Nike World Headquarters campus. Developed in collaboration with architecture firm J.P. Paull, this new addition also helps visitors move between the campus’ more active zones and the surrounding green spaces.

Drawing references from traditional Japanese origami and the structure of historic covered bridges, the design combines wood, steel, and concrete into a somewhat “folded” form that shapes both the bridge itself and the roof above it. By using these materials, the designers were able to create a sense of lightness and movement, with the structure’s folds introducing an almost kinetic rhythm to the crossing experience.

Functioning as both a thoroughfare and a place to pause, the bridge was conceived to accommodate the flow of people moving across the campus while also offering spaces where visitors can slow down and engage with the surrounding landscape.
