New FREERIDER Mountain Bike Shoes Span Flat and Clipless Pedal Options

Header: adidas

Sport brand adidas presented a new generation of FREERIDER mountain bike shoes. Four new shoes are led by FREERIDER PRO BOA® and FREERIDER PRO BOA® Clipless, suited for riders of all types and abilities. The new FREERIDER additions were developed collaboratively with athletes such as Vali Höll, Danny MacAskill and Greg Minnaar.

From 2009 to 2026

The first FREERIDER shoe was made in 2009, featuring unparalleled grip provided by its STEALTH rubber construction. Soon, the shoe became the number one choice for most professional flat pedal mountain bike riders. Soon after the original FREERIDER shoes, the Five Ten HELLCAT Clipless followed, and by 2010, adidas athletes were already winning World Cup victories wearing the new models. In 2011, Five Ten and adidas joined forces to redefine mountain bike footwear through innovation. But the latest FREERIDER models have taken things a step further.

“For more than 15 years, FREERIDER and STEALTH rubber have set the standard for flat pedal performance. But rather than making incremental updates, we took a step back and reimagined what FREERIDER could be. Building on invaluable feedback from our world-class athletes and backed by adidas’ expertise in performance footwear, we redesigned the FREERIDER to meet the needs of modern riders. The result is a new range of products, including the first-ever clipless FREERIDER, giving riders at every skill level a shoe tailored to how and where they ride.”

STEALTH Rubber grip and HELLCAT’s clip-in

The new members of the FREERIDER family bring the recognisable STEALTH Rubber grip, stability, and off-the-bike style with HELLCAT’s clip-in performance. The new models are the first of the FREERIDER family to feature both the iconic Five Ten logo and the adidas 3-Stripes logo, bringing the Five Ten label closer to the brand.

Made in collaboration with mountain bike riders

The new shoes are engineered to serve riders of any level, from the local trails to the biggest mountain bike competitions. Mountain bike riders Brendan Fairclough and Vero Sandler provided valuable insight that helped develop The FREERIDER PRO BOA alongside Mountain Bike Hall of Famer Danny MacAskill. Designed for flat pedal riders, FREERIDER PRO BOA feature STEALTH rubber throughout.

FREERIDER PRO BOA Clipless is made of Stealth Marathon, a harder-wearing compound adjusted for clip-in riding. Developed jointly with Norco adidas Race Division, the design is influenced by USA Cycling Elite Downhill National Championship winner Dakotah Norton and World Championship winners Greg Minnaar and Vali Höll. A reimagined cleat slot with 5mm of added adaptability allows wearers to customise their foot placement.

Micro-adjustable fit

All Pro models feature a five-layer toe box with PORON impact resistance that provides additional protection. Asymmetrical construction mitigates side impacts. A double Li2 BOA on the FREERIDER PRO BOA Clipless and a single Li2 BOA on the FREERIDER PRO BOA provide a micro-adjustable fit, combined with an integrated debris shield and asymmetric PERFORMFIT™ WRAP.
