Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan

Mumbai-Inspired Console from Within

Inspired by the diverse architecture, vibrant ethos, rich legacy, and thriving entertainment industry of India’s City of Dreams, Mumbai, the Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan console takes one through its bustling streets. The words ‘Yeh hai Bombay meri Jaan’ are from the famous 1956 Bollywood song meaning ‘This is what Bombay (former name for Mumbai) is, my darling!’, tell a lot about the metropolis that never sleeps.

Designed by Within, an interior design team, this Indigenous art console follows a powerful narrative and a modern form, overlaid with architectural references from the grand architecture of the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), a historic railway terminus of Mumbai. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this Gothic architectural marvel is one of the busiest railway stations in India and has become the city’s symbol.

The console’s surface is layered with intricate patterns and motifs, each telling a story of Mumbai’s vibrant life and streets. The patterns have been inlaid in exquisite silver inlay work on cast metal, (a craft known as Bidri), and combined with the delicate art of etching on stone. It was awarded an Honorable Mention in Furniture Design at SIT Furniture Design Award.
