Kimpton’s Marbella Makeover: A Fusion of 70s Vibe and Andalusian Art

Header: Veerle Evens

The new Kimpton Los Monteros in Marbella has been reimagined by the Barcelona-based interior architecture studio EL EQUIPO CREATIVO. Known for their work on Spain’s first Kimpton in Barcelona, the designers have now turned their attention to the public spaces of this classic hotel. The project dives deep into the local culture of Andalusia, pulling inspiration from its sun-drenched landscapes and artistic roots, all while giving a nod to the building’s original 1970s architecture.

A new chapter with a storied past

The design philosophy is a rich mix of influences. The greens of the local scenery, the deep blues of the Mediterranean Sea, and the bright golden sunlight are all present. This color story is found throughout the hotel, creating a lively environment. The designers also looked to the work of Málaga-born artist Picasso and other Spanish masters. This can be seen in the use of curved shapes, strong color contrasts, and modern ceramic work. At the same time, the building’s 70s origins are honored through geometric patterns and built-in niches that play with light.

An art collector’s welcome

Walking into the lobby and lounge areas feels like entering the home of an art lover. A clean white Mediterranean backdrop is warmed by wooden details and colorful furniture that brings in that 70s feel. Hand-painted murals inspired by Picasso add a unique artistic layer. This feeling continues into the lounges and library. Here, an eclectic and warm atmosphere is created with unique objects, bold carpets, and wooden sliding screens. These screens allow the spaces to feel either open to the central patio or more private.

The heart of the hotel: A green oasis

One of the hotel’s original features, the Andalusian patio, has been given new life. It is now filled with more abundant, lush plants. The architecture has been simplified, and the materials used are distinctly Mediterranean. At its center, a new sculptural water element acts as a beautiful focal point for the courtyard.

Poolside chic with a vintage touch

The pool area was redesigned to look like it was shaped by the land itself. A warm white setting makes the turquoise water pop. Platforms at different levels create a dynamic and colorful space with a retro, stylish atmosphere perfect for relaxing. Tucked onto one of these levels is the Costa Club Pool Bar, which stands out with its terracotta tiles and lattice-work. A wooden pergola above filters the sunlight, creating playful shadows and the feeling of a true Mediterranean hideaway.

The return of an icon: Azul Bar

A Marbella favorite since 1962, the Azul Bar has been updated with a “blue” theme. The centerpiece is a custom bar made with three-dimensional ceramic pieces. Large, hand-painted murals dominate the space, featuring shades of blue and feminine figures that recall Picasso’s work. These murals help create intimate, art-filled corners with plenty of character. The bar easily shifts from a relaxed daytime spot to a refined evening destination.

Dining in a garden at Jara restaurant

Jara Restaurant offers a modern take on Mediterranean food in a space that feels like an indoor garden. A white background provides a contrast for green ceramic tiles and plenty of plants. Near the open kitchen and buffet area, the tiles change to traditional Andalusian patterns with blue and yellow colors, grounding the space in local craft. The layout was carefully planned to create cozy dining spots. Walls set at angles form intimate nooks and break up the large room, while big openings in these walls ensure the space still feels connected and open.

Glamour on the roof: Escondido

For a dose of glamour, the Escondido rooftop bar is designed with stepped levels that create different zones. The top level features a stylish bar with a strong 70s character, seen in its bold geometric patterns and terracotta colors. A few steps down, a panoramic pool is decorated with retro tile designs and opens up to amazing views of the Mediterranean. During the day, it’s a casual place to hang out. At night, it becomes a sophisticated spot for drinks. With its mix of retro style and unexpected details, this rooftop is a fresh take on classic 70s Mediterranean chic.

In redesigning the public spaces, EL EQUIPO CREATIVO managed to keep the soul of the original building while giving it a fresh identity connected to its Mediterranean location. The result is a celebration of Marbella’s art and architecture, offering a refined yet comfortable experience for every guest.
