Kabata is the world’s first ever AI-powered dumbbells, designed by Studio Kabata, and Kareem Aly as the lead designer.
Kabata’s technology allows it to coach and progress users via analysis of their workout metrics. Composed primarily of iron, the AI-powered dumbbells range from 5 to 60 lbs. The iron they are made of, drives most of the weight with a premium Nylon overmold to allows for smooth functionality when sliding in and out of the base.
The product comes in an initial black color and it is gender-neutral, driven off one of the company’s core mantras – anyone can lift. This means that Kabata aims to push forward any person regardless of their level or who they are.
The Velocity-Based Training (VBT) tracks the user’s rep speed and rep quality in order to determine if the weight can be safely increased or not. Moreover, users can take advantage of the Kabata mobile app to access science-based workouts, advanced analytics, and AI-powered coaching.
There is also gaming-inspired haptic feedback adding an immersive element to the user experience. Tactile vibrations and pulses are sent straight to a user’s hand in various scenarios to increase engagement and positive feedback.
Kabata aims to build a stronger and happier world using innovative technologies and implementing them into the everyday world. Kabata combines 12 sets of dumbbells into one minimalist design. Using embedded sensors, AI, and machine learning technology, Kabata is able to comprehend all of the user’s movements and workouts, analyzing metrics such as time under tension, rep quality, and velocity. This allows Kabata to progress safely. In addition, this allows the development of effective workouts tailored towards users’ goals.
This is also the reason why Kabata AI is able to automatically change the weight in unprecedented fashion, knowing what weight an individual user needs for every move and adding time back to people’s busy days.

The Kabata dumbbells have won the FIT Sport Design Award in the Sport Equipment Design/Exercises Sports category. Furthermore, Kabata has received other awards which include the IDA Design Awards 2023 – Hobby & Sports / Fitness Equipment. IDA highlighted Kabata’s innovative approach to fitness equipment, underlining their dedication to merging aesthetic appeal with practical functionality. The Red Dot Design Award, with its international reputation for excellence in design quality, honored Kabata in the Intelligent Fitness Equipment category.
