The Orb is a new pavilion in Google’s Charleston East Campus. Built from aluminum, the artwork is a nimble architecture of experience and light. Designed by Studio THEVERYMANY, the pavilion performs a complementary structure.
The Orb also features a lightweight structure of swirling organic forms that provide visitors with an immersive experience of light and architecture. Developed through computational protocol and infused with a spirit of play, the Orb reflects the innovative ethos that defines the work at Google.
This system of many parts in ultra-thin aluminum performs as an icon and a point of engagement for both Google employees and the Mountain View public. At this intersection where Google’s campus meets public space, the pavilion establishes an inspiring outdoor room that draws curiosity and hosts interaction of different kinds.
Standing tall, the shapes of the Orb are 10 meters high. The design and computation of the project have been led by Marc Fornes, founder and architect at THEVERYMANY. The Studio specializes in large-scale, site-specific structures that unify skin, support, form and experience into a single system.
