IKEA’s limited collections have long been a space where ideas and experimentation flourish, where Swedish design and craftsmanship take center stage. However, this time, the brand adopts a more traditional approach.
Meet OMMJÄNGE: IKEA’s latest limited-edition collection, which breathes new life into Swedish traditions with a whimsical and vibrant touch. Its name is derived from a Småland Swedish term for “spending time together.”
Drawing inspiration from 19th-century Swedish folklore and rural life, this collection combines heritage and modern functionality to reflect how we live now and how we might live better.
Where Timeless Tradition Meets Contemporary Design
For designers Maria Vinka and Matilda Hunyadi, the journey began with a trip back in time to rural Sweden in the 1800s, where space in compact wooden cabins was scarce and interiors were modest.
Despite this, creativity thrived across every inch of the room as every piece of furniture served a purpose. Everything was repurposed, multifunctional, and created for practical use.
As Vinka deeply resonated with this, she also drew inspiration from an 1846 bridal portrait teeming with vibrant colours, patterns, and symbolic elements, which she has also translated into the collection.
“That image became my canvas. I hope people embrace the historical connection and appreciate the roots of our Swedish heritage.” — Maria Vinka
Together, the designers set out to capture the essence of Swedish folk art through the collection in a way that evokes joy and playfulness, honours tradition, and taps into heritage to solve contemporary challenges.
“Connecting to our heritage keeps us grounded in a fast-evolving world. OMMJÄNGE celebrates our history in a playful way. — Matilda Hunyadi,
Bringing Traditional Craftsmanship into Modern Living
From handwoven baskets and bell-shaped lamps inspired by bridal gowns, to drop-leaf tables based on 200-year-old designs, Vinka and Hunyadi draw on traditional craftsmanship to shape the entire collection.
Crafted from durable natural materials like pine, glass, wool, and stoneware, these pieces effortlessly combine beauty with longevity, championing sustainability and quality at every turn.
The OMMJÄNGE collection goes beyond visual appeal with adaptable, multifunctional pieces that bring warmth and personality to smaller homes, while also reflecting the realities of small-space living and hybrid lifestyles today.
“With OMMJÄNGE, I wanted to challenge the idea that folk art is old-fashioned. It can be just as exciting, relevant, and expressive today.”
Shifting away from the commonly used minimalist aesthetic and embracing tasteful maximalism rooted in heritage, this collection invites us to see folk art as fun, functional, and relevant to modern everyday living.
The OMMJÄNGE collection will be available in selected stores and online starting this September 2025.
