IKEA’s design archives are a treasure trove of timeless creativity. With the sixth edition of its Nytillverkad collection, the Swedish giant once again proves its ability to honor the past while creating for the future.
Launching globally in February 2025, the collection breathes new life into some of IKEA’s most iconic pieces from the 1960s through the 1990s. With bold colors, playful forms, and customizable designs, Nytillverkad celebrates vintage ingenuity updated to suit modern lifestyles.
Seating at the forefront of the collection
At the heart of the collection are four standout chairs that capture the spirit of their original designs while embracing contemporary tastes. Among the highlights is Niels Gammelgaard’s MOFALLA, a steel tube easy chair originally known as COX, which debuted in 1978. Its sleek, foldable design remains as versatile today as it was in the late ’70s.
Gill Lundgren’s DYVLINGE, a swivel armchair in a striking orange hue, revives her 1967 creation, MILA. Similarly, the SOTENÄS armchair, formerly known as PUCK (1969), now pops in cheerful red, making it an instant focal point in any room. These reimagined chairs balance form and function, offering stylish comfort that feels as fresh now as it did decades ago.
Shelving with a twist
Customization is key with the new BYAKORRE shelving unit, based on Niels Gammelgaard’s 1985 GUIDE shelves. BYAKORRE combines clean lines with a playful palette: shelf edges in vibrant blue, green, yellow, and red, or subtle white, can be reversed to suit your mood. “I love the idea that you can switch the mood in your home through design,” says Gammelgaard, highlighting the unit’s playful versatility.
Vintage elegance meets everyday functionality
Designer Erik Wørts’ 1963 NOVETTE benches return as the GUTTANE side and coffee tables. Crafted with solid oak legs and oak veneer tabletops, these pieces combine elegance and practicality seamlessly. The signature ledge, designed to catch stray magazines and cups, reflects Wørts’ attention to detail and enduring functionality.
Textiles that pop
Textile enthusiasts will find plenty to love in Nytillverkad. The ÄNGSVITVINGE bed linen features a serene blue cloud print against a white background, inspired by Sven Fristedt’s designs from 1973. Meanwhile, Anna Efverlund’s 1997 MODIG KORN popcorn pattern returns in monochromatic black-and-white as KLIPPBRÄCKA, offering a playful yet sophisticated update.
Efverlund’s touch extends to accent pieces like the curvy KÄLLARHALS vases, an updated version of her 1995 SNURRA glass vases, now available in vibrant yellow and orange. These pieces, with their soft shapes and cheerful colors, bring a sense of joy to any space.
Design for a joyful tomorrow
“Nytillverkad is about making every day a little more joyful,” explains Karin Gustavsson, creative leader of the collection. “Simply adding one piece from this collection will make a statement, with items that can also change form and color to fit each individual home.”
By drawing inspiration from four decades of design and updating these classics with bold colors and contemporary functionality, IKEA once again bridges the gap between nostalgia and innovation. Whether it’s the reimagined chairs, customizable shelves, or playful textiles, Nytillverkad offers something for every design enthusiast seeking to bring a splash of personality into their home.
The sixth edition of the Nytillverkad collection will be available globally in IKEA stores and online starting February 2025.
