Gorny Vozdukh mountain resort spans over 18,888 m² of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk mountain area in the east of Russia. The massive development designed by IND includes a 133-key hotel, 18 hillside villas, and a spa centre. IND planned to create a sanctuary from urban life at a premium resort hotel on Sakhalin Island. Thoughtful façade rhythms and a natural material palette create a seamless visual dialogue with the surrounding landscape.

IND set out to create a hotel that would provide comfort in symbiosis with a mesmerising landscape. The architecture was rooted in the mountains’ challenging terrain. The 15,000 m² hotel is embedded directly into the slope, enabling ski-in/ski-out access and other conveniences for the guests. The public areas are turned toward the slopes, providing breathtaking panoramic views. Service areas are hidden from the guests, improving productivity and reducing operating costs. The hillside part of the property enables the creation of an elegant, multi-level spatial narrative that encourages longer stays and exploration, resulting in a more profitable business model.

Nature-preserving sustainable design

IND reduced environmental impact by relying on natural materials and minimal intrusion. The reservoirs and landscaping elements, such as a fire pit and grassy loungers, are social media-friendly, providing powerful marketing tools. Additional outdoor spaces, including meditation decks, water elements, forest paths, and quiet recreation zones, represent a cohesive environment for year-round leisure.

The villas gently hover above the terrain on light structural supports, preserving the site’s natural micro-relief and native vegetation. Green roofs and a palette of locally sourced stone and timber further strengthen the project’s ecosystem-sensitive character.

The architecture of the spa is inspired by Asian vernacular forms. The imaginative worlds of Hayao Miyazaki, Japanese filmmaker and manga artist, also served as inspiration for creating an environment where fantasy and reality become one.

Calming interiors

Much like the spa, the hotel was also inspired by East Asia and particularly its philosophy of achieving relaxation and serenity through contemplation of the natural landscape. The Gorny Vozdukh hotel features standard King and Twin/Twin rooms. The welcoming interior space is engineered through the interplay of light and shadow and the use of tactile and textured materials in warm colours. Additional calming features include soft lighting, light wood details, and contrasting graphic elements.

IND’s design of a luxurious mountain resort makes full use of the natural scenery that surrounds it. From the location of the hotel embedded into the mountain slope, to panoramic views and relaxing outdoor spaces, the design proves that the best buildings are created in collaboration with the natural world and not in opposition to it.
