Cuplight is a pendant lighting solution recently recognized at the LIT Design Awards as one of the three winners in the Pendant Lighting category. Developed by Başak Okay Tekir (Basako Okay Concept Design) and Şeyma Kılıç (Well Lighting Design), what makes this fixture unique is how it combines acoustics with lighting technology.
The cup
The shape of a cup inspires the design of Cuplight: its conical body is surrounded by a circular light element resembling a saucer, while the felt-covered acoustic cone reflects the form of the cup itself. The designers applied indirect and focused lighting to the pendant, making it the perfect addition for various environments, from high-ceilinged open spaces to smaller, enclosed interiors.
Cuplight’s conical surface is clad with acoustic felt to improve sound absorption in areas that require noise control. This light-toned felt is also used to enhance light reflection and create a greater perception of spaciousness.
The light
A distinctive feature of this fixture is the full illumination of its conical surface, an effect created by a circular light profile placed at a 45-degree angle combined with a 120-degree light source. The reflected light from the cone provides soft, indirect lighting that evenly illuminates the interiors without feeling overbearing.
The internal structure of Cuplight is built on a metal framework, with acoustic felt panels attached at six points with stabilizing rings at the top and bottom to ensure a secure fit. The external circular light ring and a concealed inner point light are integrated into the same framework using 5mm conduit tubes, which also function as cable carriers. The drivers for the light sources are mounted onto the metal structure to make assembly easy, plus it maintains a clean design.
The lighting system of Cuplight is designed for dual-circuit control, allowing the indirect ambient light and the point light source to be operated independently. The circular light source provides a minimum output of 1000 lumens per meter, which can be adjusted according to the spatial requirements. For high-ceiling environments, higher output may be necessary. At the same time, the inner point light can be fitted with a narrow-angle reflector for large spaces or a medium-angle reflector for residential or office areas.
