Covent Garden Market, London’s largest and most visited market, has recently undergone an illuminating transformation. The market, already celebrated for its luxury retail stores, award-winning restaurants, and vibrant theatres, now boasts a beautiful new external lighting scheme that has earned it the LIT Lighting Design Award for Heritage Lighting Design.

The project, completed in August 2023, showcases the innovative work of BDP’s lighting design team, led by Colin Ball, together with Jonathan Redden and Studiotech, who managed the entire engineering design and implementation process.

Balancing modern lighting and historical lanterns

The biggest challenge in this project was balancing modern lighting technology with the heritage of a Grade II* listed building. Covent Garden Market’s original gas-lit charm was preserved by meticulously restoring its historic lanterns. The UK-based manufacturer of the original fittings refurbished the lanterns or produced replicas, ensuring the design stayed true to historic photos and drawings. Today, eight repurposed lanterns line each side of the building, with 12 more gracing the colonnades in a zig-zag formation.

The lighting design utilizes dimmable LED modules replicating the warm, ambient glow of gas lighting. This innovative approach reduces energy consumption while maintaining the market’s iconic character. A comfortable, evenly distributed lighting scheme enhances safety and security, encouraging visitors to linger and return.

Illuminating building’s accents for a memorable experience

The project extended its focus beyond the lanterns to include the entire architectural framework of the market. The portico buildings, now elegantly illuminated, serve as welcoming gateways visible from all approaches. Uplighting on the bottleneck balustrade reveals the warmth of the stone, while the London brick chimneys are highlighted to add texture and depth. Building columns are accented with vertical brightness, contrasting with low-level illumination to enhance visual hierarchy.

Dynamic RGBW lighting introduces a playful element that is perfect for special events. These lighting sequences create a memorable and engaging experience, positioning Covent Garden as a must-visit destination.

Sustainability

Sustainability was a very important part of the project. The outdated high-energy lighting system was replaced with energy-efficient solutions. The team conducted extensive 1:1 mock-ups to refine the design, ensuring minimal impact on the heritage fabric. The project upheld the highest conservation standards by reducing the number of penetrations per fitting and collaborating closely with Historic England.

Enhancing the urban experience

The revamped lighting scheme highlights Covent Garden Market’s architectural beauty and enhances the visitor experience. The re-lit piazzas guide arrivals from the underground station, creating a sense of harmony and welcome. This thoughtful design contributes to social sustainability, fostering a sense of community and boosting footfall in the area.
