Situated in the scenic mountains of Silay, Negros Occidental, the Tayap Chapel was built as a gift from a generous landowner, providing a place for the local community to worship and gather. Designed by Antonio Legaspi Architects, the chapel incorporates traditional materials such as bamboo, antique hardwood, and cogon grass, creating a structure that fits naturally into its surroundings. However, what truly enhances its presence is the carefully planned lighting design by Christine Sicangco Lighting Design, Inc. (CSLDI).
Award-winning lighting design
Led by principal designers Christine Sicangco and Jo Vincent T. Gonzaga, CSLDI approached the chapel’s lighting with a focus on subtlety and function. Their thoughtful execution earned the Tayap Chapel a win in the Religious & Spiritual Site Lighting Design category at the LIT Lighting Design Awards. The design highlights the architecture while preserving the natural beauty of the site.
Lighting that respects nature
A major goal of the project was to minimize light pollution and maintain clear views of the night sky. The designers opted for concealed lighting fixtures that accentuate architectural features without creating glare. Inside, warm lighting enhances the bamboo ceiling, while chandeliers provide a soft and calming glow. Outside, uplights highlight the detailed wooden facade without overwhelming the natural setting.
Enhancing the architectural experience
The large open windows, designed to bring the surrounding landscape into the chapel, are subtly lit to create an inviting atmosphere. Adjustable lights carefully illuminate the intricately carved main doors, emphasizing craftsmanship without disrupting the chapel’s peaceful character. Spill light is kept minimal, with gentle illumination placed strategically around the greenery, allowing the chapel to stand gracefully against the starlit sky.
A space for reflection and connection
The Tayap Chapel is a place where architecture and lighting come together to create a spiritual retreat. The balance between natural and artificial light ensures that the space remains inviting and contemplative. CSLDI’s expertise in lighting design plays a key role in maintaining the chapel’s peaceful ambiance while respecting the environment.
By honoring both the architecture and its surroundings, the Tayap Chapel stands as an example of how well-designed lighting can enhance a space without overpowering it. The award-winning work of CSLDI ensures that this chapel remains a quiet and beautiful refuge for those seeking peace and reflection.
