Imagine walking into one of those gorgeous 17th-century canal houses and finding yourself in a room full of wonders, like an old-timey “Wunderkammer” or cabinet of curiosities, but this one is a walk-through piece of natural art.

Giant birds and a dinosaur friend

The stars of the show at the Art Zoo Museum are the incredible preserved animal artworks by the world-famous artist group Darwin, Sinke & Van Tongeren. These aren’t your average dusty museum pieces. Here, feathers almost glow, muscles look ready to pounce, and the lifelike eyes seem to watch you as you walk by. You’ll find yourself looking up into huge birdcages, called aviaries, filled with animals that look like they are ruling their own world – birds, slithery snakes, impressive crocodiles, and even a T-Rex! It’s like a moment frozen in time, with all the richness of old Dutch paintings, making you feel these creatures could blink and move any second.

Art, nature, and skill all in one place

The Art Zoo Museum is a team effort by the Vrije Academie for Art & Culture and the artists Darwin, Sinke, and Van Tongeren. For over 35 years, the Vrije Academie has been helping many people connect with art and culture through talks, classes, trips, and shows.

Peter van Duinen, the director, is really excited. He said:

“It’s amazing how these artists are giving a fresh look to the 17th century, which I love so much, with their stunning preserved animal setups. It’s a great new thing for Amsterdam’s art world. We are super proud to work with Darwin, Sinke & Van Tongeren.”

The artist pair Darwin, Sinke & Van Tongeren are known everywhere for their unique way of preserving animals. They combine amazing skill with a deep respect for the natural world. Their work is so good that even famous artist Damien Hirst has some in his collection.

“In a city where things are getting bigger and more modern all the time, this museum is a cozy spot in the middle of everything where you can really appreciate the art of animal preservation in all its beauty. It’s a pretty way to honor nature, wonder, and all the delicate and special things in life.”
