A Hostel That Doesn’t Feel Like One and That’s the Point

A new destination in Madrid is changing how travelers think about hostels. The Loft Hostel on C. de la Esperanza offers a fresh take on the modern travel experience. It’s a place that captures the bohemian spirit of its neighborhood, creating a welcoming spot for visitors worldwide. The project, led by Metrik Studio, shows a deep understanding of what today’s traveler seeks: a place with character and comfort.

A nod to the past

The design team, with lead designer Raül Tonelli, along with 2A1 Studio, Sari Vial, and Fran Fernández, made a conscious choice to honor the area’s industrial roots. Step inside, and you’ll find a rich palette of exposed brick, metal, and reclaimed wood. These materials give the space a warm and energetic feel. The designers didn’t just pick things that look good; they chose materials that tell a story of the building’s history. They brought in warm colors and soft fabrics to soften the industrial edge, creating a comfortable balance that encourages guests to unwind.

Spaces for people

A key idea behind The Loft Hostel was to create flexible common areas. The designers at Metrik Studio, a Barcelona-based consultancy with over twenty years of experience, know that hostels are about more than just a place to sleep. They are about connection. The shared spaces are set up to make it easy for guests to meet and socialize. The layout is open and inviting, providing spots for conversation and relaxation, which is a big part of the hostel experience.

The focus on guest comfort extends to the rooms. Interior designer Sari Vial and the team carefully considered what a traveler needs. The result is rooms designed for both privacy and ease. Thoughtful details like individual curtains for each bed and personal reading lights mean guests can create their own little private space. This approach shows a real consideration for the person staying there, making their visit more personal and comfortable.

A design that gets noticed

The Loft Hostel recently won the LIV Hospitality Design Award for Interior Design Hostel. This international award celebrates innovation in hospitality spaces, a fitting tribute to a project that successfully creates a unique and welcoming environment. For the team at Sari Vial Interiorismo, this award confirms their belief that design should tell a story and create moving experiences. Their philosophy, “interiors that respect time, nature, and human beings,” is fully expressed in this award-winning project.
