JOURNAL STANDARD Transforms Dickies’ Iconic 42283 Work Short

JOURNAL STANDARD, a Japanese brand, has collaborated once again with Dickies, this time reimagining the 42283 work shorts. Rather than changing the finish of the model, JOURNAL STANDARD took the original long, loose 42283 apart and rebuilt it from two pairs, giving the shorts an off-centre shape while keeping the familiar Dickies proportions.

Between streetwear and workwear

The inspiration was dual, sitting somewhere between standard American workwear and the longer, baggier shorts that became a hit during the 90s. JOURNAL STANDARD kept the same long, loose shape and then threw it slightly off through the cut and the way the shorts are pieced back together.

Borrowing from the original

Some of the smaller details of the new piece come from older Dickies models made before the 1990s. The shorts keep the adjustable waistband, along with slimmer belt loops than the ones used today. Simply, these touches maintain some of the most recognisable parts of the 42283, which has long been defined by its loose fit, flat front and workwear design.

The fabric changes

While the standard 42283 is made in Dickies’ poly-cotton twill, this version uses 100% cotton twill and is dyed in brown, beige or navy after being sewn together. This process gives the cloth a duller, rougher finish and softens the surface, making the finished product look like an older pair that has already been worn in.

JOURNAL STANDARD is selling the model as the ODD SHAPE SHORTS, which says enough about the style. The point is not to erase the Dickies original or turn it into something overly polished; it is simply to creatively transform the loved style and give it a new future.
