The Blueman House Offers A Fresh Take on Semi-Detached Living

Header: Khoo Guo Jie

The Blueman House is not your typical semi-detached home. Designed by K2LD Architects, with lead designer Ko Shiou Hee and designer Charlotte Wong, this distinct residence in Singapore challenges traditional ideas of space and openness. Completed in 2023, the project recently won the LIV Award in the Architectural Design Brand New category, celebrating its innovative approach to residential architecture.

Dynamic composition and sense of openness

Instead of the usual front boundary wall, The Blueman House takes an open approach, using landscaping to create a sense of airiness and connection with the surroundings. This design choice not only welcomes natural light but also removes the feeling of enclosure that often comes with semi-detached homes. The house itself consists of three stacked volumes subtly shifted to create a visually dynamic structure. Large glass panels add to the effect, making the upper levels appear as if they are floating while allowing sunlight to flood the interiors.

Layout that reinforces the idea of indoor-outdoor living

One of the standout features of the home is the long pool running alongside the property. It serves as both a calming visual element and a subtle divider, offering privacy while maintaining an open feel. Inside, the ground floor is designed for effortless movement between the living spaces and the outdoor deck. This layout makes the home ideal for gatherings, reinforcing the idea of indoor-outdoor living. Every room, including the staircase, is designed to receive natural light, offering bright and inviting spaces with views of the garden and pool.

Warm elements and dark tones for depth

The materials used throughout the house add depth and contrast. Warm timber elements soften the look, while dark grey tones in the kitchen and bathrooms create a striking balance between light and shadow. Thoughtful details extend beyond structure; designated spaces have been incorporated to display the homeowner’s art collection, making the house as much a gallery as a living space.

With The Blueman House, K2LD Architects have shown what a semi-detached home can be. The combination of open spaces, natural elements, and contemporary design proves that homes don’t need to be isolated from their surroundings to feel private and serene.
