The Hayes Group Architects has once again cemented its position as a leader in modern architectural design, earning two prestigious Design Awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Mateo Chapter. The firm’s exceptional work on two standout commercial projects in Redwood City and Palo Alto has been recognized for its innovative approach to design and commitment to creating spaces that resonate with their environment and purpose.
726 Main Street, Redwood City: Celebrating history through modern design
Hayes Group Architects’ adaptive reuse project at 726 Main Street in Redwood City received the coveted Honor Award. This project transforms a historic structure into a stunning, modern office space while preserving its original character. By integrating transparency and contemporary materials, the design highlights the building’s rich history while offering a sleek, functional workspace.
Commissioned by the Stormland Group, a premier land development firm in Silicon Valley, the project exemplifies the synergy between innovation and respect for heritage. Ed Storm, founder of Stormland Group, is known for appreciating modern architecture, a value shared by Hayes Group Architects. Ken Hayes, founder of Hayes Group Architects, said:
“Our client’s vision aligned perfectly with our commitment to marrying modern design with historical preservation.”
2515 El Camino, Palo Alto: A dynamic multi-functional space
The second accolade, a Citation Award, was presented for the firm’s groundbreaking mixed-use development at 2515 El Camino in Palo Alto. The project transformed a one-acre site into a vibrant space featuring townhouses, retail, and office areas within a landscaped setting designed for community interaction. The development enhances the pedestrian experience and connects flawlessly with the nearby commercial district.
Initially entitled by Hayes Group Architects for its previous owner, the property’s transformation was realized under the new ownership of Huafa Industrial. The result is a dynamic, multi-functional space reflecting Hayes Group Architects’ strengths in creating environments prioritizing both form and functionality.
A commitment to client-centric design
At the heart of Hayes Group Architects’ philosophy is an iterative design process that ensures each project aligns with the client’s core values, goals, and vision. The firm’s architectural style is not one-size-fits-all but rather a response to the unique characteristics of the site, its context, and the client’s aesthetic and functional needs.
“While our firm is recognized for modern design, we are also known for delivering architectural solutions that help our clients differentiate their projects through sustainability, innovation, and quality,” says Ken Hayes.
Since its founding in 1996 by Ken Hayes, Hayes Group Architects has completed over 200 commercial projects, many in areas renowned for their rigorous entitlement processes, such as Menlo Park and Palo Alto. The firm’s portfolio includes award-winning projects like 611 Cowper Street in Palo Alto, recognized by the City of Palo Alto Architectural Review Board’s Architectural Excellence Awards program.
Hayes Group Architects has received more than 20 awards for its work throughout the Bay Area. These accolades reflect the firm’s unwavering dedication to sustainable, high-quality, and innovative architectural solutions that set their projects apart in a competitive landscape.
