Step Inside Tiffany & Co’s Legendary Fifth Avenue Store

Tiffany & Co. marked a new chapter by reopening its iconic flagship store, now known as “The Landmark,” at Fifth Avenue in New York City. This crown jewel of Manhattan is one of the city’s largest and most immersive luxury destinations, showcasing custom artwork, one-of-a-kind jewels, and captivating displays.

This major renovation, the first since the store opened in 1940, brought together two architectural powerhouses: architect and interior designer Peter Marino, who reimagined the store’s interior, and Shohei Shigematsu of OMA New York, who redesigned the building’s structure with a three-story extension above the existing facade. While the original exterior charm has been preserved, the interior reveals a brand-new world of wonder that reflects Tiffany’s rich heritage and commitment to innovation.

This transformed flagship store, the first renovation since its opening in 1940, portrays the new image of Tiffany & Co., a cultural hub and true landmark destination showcasing exquisite interiors, superior hospitality, and cutting-edge art and design. It is a narrative of both past and future as one enters through the iconic details of the original façade and moves into an expansive and immersive main floor experience.

Motorized, recessed accents play a quiet, supporting role to the commissioned central skylight, drawing focus to the merchandise displays. Featured artwork and washed walls in the main elevator vestibule draw visitors up to the 6 merchandising levels above. Arrival on each floor is a unique and dazzling experience.

Various layers of light feature myriad bespoke, artisanal materials and custom installations. Careful studies place lighting above casework at a maximum 10-degree tilt to ensure try-on jewels are never in shadow. The intricate detailing of lighting within the custom casework enhances the brilliance of the merchandise.

The added jewel box houses an event space with highly flexible light slots that respond to various programs. The signature “Tiffany Blue” spills out from a system of lighting embedded at each window opening and the spandrel of the upper levels, complemented by a wash of light at the underside of the floating upper volume.

The Landmark was recently recognized with an Honorable Mention at the LIT Lighting Design Awards. This prestigious accolade highlights the exceptional work of the lighting design team from Tillotson Design Associates, led by Erin Dreyfous, Gabriela Grullon, Noor Traboulsi, and Trinetra Manickavasagam. They collaborated with notable firms, including CallisonRTKL for executive architecture, OMA for the design of the building addition, and Peter Marino for interior architecture. This recognition underscores the innovative lighting design that enhances the store’s immersive experience.
