Design Miami Spotlight: æquō’s Fusion of Art and Craft

æquō, India’s first collectible design gallery founded by Tarini Jindal Handa in 2022, will exhibit at Design Miami for the first time in December, showcasing a curated selection of pieces from its new collection, Panna, by Creative Director Florence Louisy, and works by Cédric Courtin, Wendy Andreu, Valeriane Lazard, Frédéric Imbert, and Boris Brucher.

The gallery brings together global contemporary design with India’s fine craftsmanship and materials, helping to advance the country’s cultural heritage through creativity and collaboration.

Named after the Hindi word “पना,” meaning “folio” in English, Panna presents a collection of sculptural pieces crafted through the art of folding diverse materials. From copper meticulously oxidized in Jaipur, burnt pieces enameled in Alibag, to soft Kashmiri felt, Florence Louisy’s new collection pays a profound tribute to India’s rich craft heritage while blending it with fresh contemporary design. At the core of this collection lies a deep collaboration with local artisans, a signature of the gallery.

Handcrafted in Mumbai, the Felted wool tapestry creates an elegant interplay of volume with a subtle duality: a broad, substantial rectangle, incised at two strategic points, intertwined with a slender piece that threads through the base. Felt has played an enduring role in India’s artisanal heritage for centuries, notably among nomadic and rural communities. The locally-sourced felt in this tapestry encapsulates the essence of rural India.

æquō will also exhibit several furniture pieces from Office, also part of Louisy’s Panna collection, made from large, weathered copper plates which, through careful oxidation and skilled craftsmanship, are bent and assembled to form a harmonious ensemble.

Louisy’s Esmal Console and Esmal Wall Light, both enameled using a fusion of glass and copper heated by a traditional wood fire, will also be exhibited.

æquō will show a curated selection of pieces by collaborating designers at Design Miami, including the Guéridon side table by Frédéric Imbert, the Modhera Light and Low Table in brass by Wendy Andreu, Tavit by Florence Louisy in bronze and aluminum, and a Leather Console, designed by Florence Louisy and wrapped in leather by Cedric Courtin. Valeriane Lazard will present a new edition of her Bedsa Chair with a leather cushion and roping.

æquō will also exhibit the Pila Screen and Elke Screen designed by Florence Louisy and illustrated by Boris Bucher. The Elke Screen is made in collaboration with the embroiderer Jean-François Lesage, whose embroidery interpretation of bodies in fusion, which is Boris’ signature, testifies to the sensitivity, style, and history of Jean-François Lesage’s work between India and France for over 20 years.

“We are excited to be participating in Design Miami for the first time. It’s a global fair that attracts designers and collectors from around the world, and we look forward to introducing our gallery and showing how we are bringing together fine contemporary design with India’s rich heritage of craftsmanship and materiality.”
