The Moon chair was designed by Kononenko Id, with Julia Kononenko and Kravchenko Artem as lead designers, for the Ukrainian furniture company Tivoli. The crescent moon shape was later recognised by the SIT Furniture Design Awards as the winner of their Chair category, and it’s not hard to see why.
The chair’s shape comes together due to a soft curve that wraps around the back and sides, giving it a rounded outline easily recognisable as a crescent moon. There is no contrast or any bold features, the designers wanted the focus to stay on the smooth line of the backrest and how it connects to the seat. To add an extra layer of softness, the seat is padded and upholstered with a fabric that is “a delight to touch”, per the design studio.
The legs are straight and narrow, angled just enough to support the frame without stealing the spotlight from the curved lines above it. This minimalist touch ensures that the Moon chat can be used in any environment, domestic or commercial.
The materials were chosen for both feel and durability, something seen in the wood frame and soft surfaces where the body meets the chair. It’s not trying to do too much at once, which is likely part of what makes it adaptable to different interiors without changing its character.
