Chess by Jader Almeida is an award-winning piece that reinterprets the traditional chessboard as a sculptural object. Designed for NJF Indústria e Comércio de Móveis and awarded in the Other Homeware category at the SIT Furniture Design Awards, the piece moves away from the usual flat format, introducing a stepped base with an almost dynamic surface.

Each chess piece is shaped with a level of precision and proportion found in jewellery design, and the game is played in a fragmented terrain. The board and pieces together form a functional set, but due to the attention put into the material finish and form, it can also work as a display piece.

While this version doesn’t incorporate technology or interactive features, its unique physical form and finish are enough to turn the heads of chess players from around the world.
