Time Off Between the Trees at Cabins in Mexico

Header: Sergio López

Located within a forest about 20 minutes from the lake in Valle de Bravo, State of Mexico, the San Simon Cabins consist of five volumes distributed over an area of 5,000 m2 of land, designed by Weber Arquitectos. These cabins are part of an extensive architectural programme that wanted to have the least impact possible on the existing vegetation of the area while also integrating the green and brown giants into the architecture at all times. Thus, instead of a large joint footprint that required the felling of several trees, the different cabins move between the gaps that naturally exist between the trees.

A cabin for social use, four guest cabins, and a main cabin that houses the client’s home make up the project, all with orientations that allow you to take full advantage of natural light and also get incredible views towards the forest – plus, each cabin has its own terrace. The bathrooms, complemented with an interior patio with vegetation, can be differentiated from the rooms through their lower height and framing made out of treated wood lattices that filter the light and provide privacy.

The predominant materials are the volcanic stone that covers the walls, which contrasts with the stave and local pine beams that form the structure and finish of the lids. The interior ambience of this weekend refuge was carefully crafted with the architectural design, which aimed to create a warm atmosphere by using clear lines and modern details.

The furniture and all of the decorative elements were especially curated for the space, having either been chosen or designed by the office. To make the hard decisions on which bed or lighting fixture was better, the designers took into account the wooded environment. This environment has a very natural appearance due to the calm white oak wood, which was later combined with the other finishes. The colour palette in general is very sober and forceful: greys dress both the facades and interiors, as well as bathroom fixtures, all of which are surrounded by white and lightened up by black luminaires.
