The Opulence of Gordon Ramsay’s First Restaurant Outside the UK

The Gordon Ramsay Bar and Grill, designed by Sunway Design with Nelson Yong Num Heng Yong as lead designer, was recently inaugurated at Sunway City Kuala Lumpur. This new restaurant was the centre of attention of both design and food lovers because this is not only the brand’s first location outside of the United Kingdom but also a space with the richest version of British interior design

The restaurant, located at the lobby level of Sunway Resort, sees its ambience crafted by huge floor-to-ceiling windows that give guests invaluable views of the lagoon. A private dining room brings a certain je ne sais quoi to the restaurant, complemented by rich red and forest green coloured furniture that is accentuated by polished walnut hardwood flooring and brass finishes. The ceiling reminds one of the saying “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, as it is decorated with 24-karat gold leaf applied by hand—very English.

Alongside the rich and elegant decoration, monochrome portraits of British style icons, such as The Rolling Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger, the original 007 Sir Sean Connery, and supermodels Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy, fill up the walls of the main dining room. These portraits were taken by the famous photographers Terry O’Neill and Arthur Steel and bring about an extra British feel to the space.

The bar area is dressed in the same colour scheme as the rest of the space, creating the perfect vibe for guests to enjoy a menu of classic favourites, cocktails with Malaysian-inspired flavours, and a selection of premium wines and spirits. Next to the cocktail bar, a wine cellar sure to be the dream of any wine enthusiast covers the walls alongside a portrait of Gordon Ramsay himself in a British military outfit—fit for the theme.
