The Kelp Chair: Furniture Inspired By Ocean Vegetation

Who hasn’t looked at nature and thought, “I wish I could bring this home with me”? Interesting Times Gang, a design studio, took this idea and brought it to life with the Kelp Collection, more specifically with the Kelp Chair. Inspired by ocean vegetation in the Swedish archipelago, the chair features undulating lines and organically swaying silhouettes, all without any joints in sight.

Advanced 3D printing technology is what makes the fluidity of the design possible, but the material also helps with the trick. The Kelp Chair is made from a composite material that includes recycled fishing nets, end-of-life maritime gear, and wood fiber, further echoing the vision it was born from.

The studio wished to address waste issues in consumer culture through the collection, so they made sure that the chair was fully recyclable. The materials, true to this objective, can be ground down and reused to create new biomaterials within a closed-loop system, allowing new creations to arise from the same base material.
