The End of an Icon as BMW Confirms Z4 Farewell With a Final Edition Built for Collectors

For nearly a quarter of a century, the BMW Z4 has represented a specific kind of freedom. It is the open-top sports car that put the wind in your hair and placed the driver closer to the road. Now, that story is reaching its last chapter. Production of the BMW Z4 will stop in March 2026, but the manufacturer is not letting the model fade away quietly. Instead, they are releasing the BMW Z4 Final Edition. This package offers a rare chance to own a specific configuration of the roadster, with an order window that opens in late January 2026.

A darker, bolder exterior

The first thing you notice about this car is the paint. The designers have chosen Frozen Matt Black as the signature finish for the Final Edition. This colour is exclusive to this limited run and gives the car a serious, grounded appearance. It moves away from the shiny, metallic finishes often seen on roadsters and offers something more muted and aggressive.

To support this dark theme, every Final Edition model comes with the M High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim. This removes chrome elements and replaces them with high-gloss black pieces, which match the matt paint very well. While you can choose other colours from the standard range at no extra cost, the Frozen Matt Black is the intended look for this send-off. The dark exterior is cut by the M Sport brake in High-gloss Red. These red callipers sit behind the wheels and offer a strong pop of colour against the black bodywork, signalling the stopping power available to the driver.

Inside the cabin

The red accents on the outside carry over into the interior design. The design team used distinctive, contrasting red seams to create a visual link throughout the cockpit. You will find this red stitching on the instrument panel, the centre console, and the door trims. It also outlines the M Sport seats, which are finished in a mix of Vernasca leather and Alcantara.

The driver holds onto an M Alcantara steering wheel, which features the same matching red stitching. This material choice offers better grip and hints at the car’s sporting capability. To confirm you are stepping into a limited-run vehicle, the door sills feature specially engraved strips. These small details ensure the interior feels distinct from a standard Z4.

Performance and options

The Final Edition trim is not restricted to just the most powerful engine. You can add this package to any current Z4 model. This includes the sDrive20i, the sDrive30i, and the top-tier BMW Z4 M40i. The M40i remains the powerhouse of the group, using a six-cylinder in-line engine that produces 340 hp.

The price for the Final Edition trim is set at 4,200 euros for the higher-end models, where the M Sport package is already standard. For the entry-level sDrive20i, the price is 7,400 euros because it must also include the M Sport package upgrades.

A legacy of roadsters

This Final Edition serves as a bookend to a history that began in 2002. The first generation, the E85, was built in South Carolina and became known for its long bonnet, short rear deck, and sharp lines. It was a car that prioritised agility with a 50/50 weight distribution.

In 2008, the second generation changed the formula by introducing a retractable hardtop. This metal roof could open or close in 20 seconds, turning the roadster into a comfortable coupé when the weather turned bad. It was also the first Z4 to use the iDrive system.

The current third generation returned to the classic fabric soft-top when it launched in 2018. It brought back a purist focus on handling and driver engagement, which this Final Edition aims to celebrate one last time.

The BMW Z4 Final Edition is a respectful goodbye to a significant car. By focusing on a unique matte black exterior and a cabin defined by red stitching and Alcantara, BMW has created a version of the roadster that feels custom and rare. It does not try to reinvent the car but rather highlights the best parts of its design character. For those who have always admired this two-seater, this limited run offers one last opportunity to secure a piece of BMW history before the production line stops forever.
