The Bard College Residence Complex Shows a New Side of Student Housing Design

Heading: Chris Mottalini

The massive Bard College North Campus Residence Complex was designed by CIVILIAN studio in partnership with KPF Architecture firm and DBI Projects. The new campus consists of a 20,000 sf Head House building and four dormitory buildings that can host over 400 students. This isn’t the first joint project between the three companies that already collaborated in 2021 on the creation of two student residences on the Berlin campus.

Standing on the shoulders of giants

Drawing on the legacy of such prominent architects as Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. CIVILIAN has created a functional, modern campus with a cohesive interior response to KPF’s architecture. Informed by the great dormitories of the past, the interiors provide a strong creative identity to the campus.

Bard College’s Head House

Bard College’s innovative spirit is integrated into the design of the Head House. The energy of democratic space that produced eminent alumni such as filmmaker Gia Coppola and actor Blythe Danner is embodied in an archival photo exhibit displayed at ground level. The spirit of a mould-breaking educational facility spans to encompass a large living room where students can meet and work together.

The residences are arranged around the green landscapes. The Head House’s ground level is equipped with offices and lounge spaces. Contemporary furniture and custom-made side and work tables with integrated lighting create a perfect environment for academic activities.

Study carrels for small study groups

The ground level is connected to the upper level via a stair atrium. On the upper floor, study carrels for small study groups are created. Hidden behind slated screens near the lounge, the space provides the privacy needed for group projects. Archival photo frames with photos of previous collaborations and creativity provide additional motivation.

Student apartments

The campus hosts 92 individual student apartments furnished with solid wood and laminate surfaces. Great flexibility is ensured with a range of modular furniture solutions. The lighting design across different apartment levels takes cues from Modernism. With its emphasis on affordability and user experience, the apartments evoke the warmth and joyfulness of communal living.
