Café Lido is a calm three-meal venue situated within Hotel Mar Monte, a historic property located along Santa Barbara’s beachfront built in 1932 to house the glamorous and rich of Los Angeles. The café occupies the original breezeway, previously the main entrance to the hotel, and was designed by Beleco to highlight the building’s history, which can be seen in the exposed arches and ceilings.
The Mediterranean influence is evident not only in the café’s menu but also in the material choices. Blue Moroccan zellige tiles, seen along the bar and the bases of the arches, were used for their handcrafted feel, which the Mediterranean culture is known for. Hanging from the ceiling, woven rattan pendant lights add a warm feel to the room while also reminding guests of their proximity to the ocean. Additionally, suspended plants enhance the space’s connection to the surrounding natural environment.
Seating is divided between banquettes and wooden chairs, arranged around simple tables and dressed in light wood tones. Perhaps one of the most recognisable elements of this design, a mural of botanical illustrations covers the light-coloured walls, filling the space with monochromatic line drawings of flowers and leaves.
The café’s energy and purpose shift throughout the day, taking advantage of the natural light flowing through large windows. As the day progresses, the lighting becomes softer, and the warm tones of the natural materials contribute to a more intimate and cosy dining experience.
