During a brief stop on the island of Santorini, a quick hand sketch marked the beginning of a long-term design process for a piece of nursery furniture intended to grow alongside the child. The result is the award-winning Santorini Deluxe 5-in-1 Convertible Crib with Toddler Guardrail, designed by Justin L. Segal in collaboration with Dashiell Corvin-Brittin and Chris Wyman for Storkcraft.
The sketch, made while observing the layered topography and curved geometries of the island’s architectural elements and coastlines, served less as a literal reference and more as a cue for how softness, repetition, and openness could be integrated into a functional yet appealing design.
The main element of the design is a continuous curved base that mirrors the arc of the upper crib rail, creating an appealing loop. All four sides use rounded vertical dowels instead of flat slats or panels, allowing parents to look into the crib while softening the edges to ensure the children remain safe.
From the start, the crib was idealised as a five-stage convertible system, including a toddler bed with a guardrail, as it ensured that the product would accompany the little ones’ childhood. The curved frame and vertical dowels can be seen in all configurations, allowing the piece to shift function without changing its proportions or adding new components.
Manufactured in Canada, the crib’s materials and finishes were selected to meet current safety and environmental standards. It holds GREENGUARD Gold Certification.
