Nike has once again pushed the boundaries of design and technology with its latest innovation, the Air Max 1000. This sneaker, unveiled during ComplexCon 2024 in Las Vegas, reimagines the iconic Air Max 1 silhouette through the transformative power of 3D printing. Created in collaboration with German 3D-printing pioneer Zellerfeld, the Air Max 1000 is not just a shoe but a bold statement about the future of manufacturing and design.
A leap forward in footwear design
The Air Max 1000 pays homage to the Air Max 1, originally released in 1987, which revolutionized the sneaker world with its visible air cushion in the heel. While the air cushion remains, the rest of the Air Max 1000 is a single-piece construction, printed using advanced 3D printing techniques. Using a single flexible material allows for intricate design details, precise control over density and texture, and unparalleled comfort. The outsole is firm and supportive, while the shoe’s upper part is flexible, offering a sock-like fit that eliminates the need for laces.
Chief Innovation Officer John Hoke encapsulated the excitement around the new sneaker:
“It’s control, times precision, times expression—all of which are vital to sport and to design. When those variables are multiplied at once, the future of our product really does feel unlimited.”
Collaboration with Zellerfeld
Zellerfeld, renowned for its expertise in 3D-printing footwear, has worked with luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Moncler. Their partnership with Nike on the Air Max 1000 represents a seamless blend of technological innovation and iconic design.
Zellerfeld’s proprietary 3D-printing platform, often likened to a “YouTube of shoes,” enables bespoke designs and custom fittings through foot scanning technology. The Air Max 1000 leverages these capabilities to deliver a sneaker that is as functional as it is visually striking.
The debut at ComplexCon
Nike’s presence at ComplexCon 2024 was nothing short of spectacular. The Air Max 1000 was unveiled alongside an immersive exhibition showcasing the evolution of Nike Air technology, from early prototypes by Frank Rudy to futuristic designs. ComplexCon attendees had the exclusive opportunity to win one of 1,000 pairs of the Air Max 1000, which were also displayed in various bold colorways, including vibrant red, orange, white, and black with green accents.
In addition to the Air Max 1000, the event featured other highlights such as Travis Scott’s new Zoom Field Jaxx sneaker and a graffiti-inspired Air Force 1 collaboration with designer Stash. The festival underscored Nike’s leadership role at the intersection of sport, culture, and design.

While no official release date or pricing has been announced, the Air Max 1000 is expected to be key in Nike’s upcoming Air Max Day celebrations.
