In an industry-defining partnership, Mercedes-Benz and Google Cloud have integrated AI-driven conversational search capabilities into the MBUX Virtual Assistant. The collaboration aims to transform the driving experience by introducing seamless, natural-language interactions with navigation systems, starting with the new Mercedes-Benz CLA series.
A next-generation AI partnership
Leveraging Google Cloud’s new Automotive AI Agent, powered by Gemini on Vertex AI, Mercedes-Benz is redefining in-car navigation. The AI Agent, specifically designed for the automotive sector, integrates the power of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to offer natural, dynamic, and highly personalized conversations.
Google Maps Platform, a critical component of this system, provides real-time updates on 250 million global points of interest, ensuring Mercedes-Benz drivers access the latest, most relevant information. Over 100 million daily updates to Google Maps ensure drivers receive accurate guidance, whether searching for charging stations or the perfect fine-dining spot.
A new era of conversational navigation
The enhanced MBUX Virtual Assistant brings navigation to life with natural, multi-turn dialogue capabilities. For instance, drivers can ask, “Could you guide me to the nearest fine-dining restaurant for a unique culinary experience?” and seamlessly follow up with, “Does the restaurant have good reviews?” or “What is the chef’s signature dish?” The AI-powered system not only delivers precise answers but also displays navigation details directly on the vehicle’s interface.
“At Mercedes-Benz, we seek to offer our customers an exceptional digital experience,” said Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
“Launching with the new CLA, our next-gen navigation will allow drivers and passengers to use voice commands to obtain comprehensive and personalized information within seconds.”
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, shared similar enthusiasm:
“Our new Automotive AI Agent will help drivers navigate and search with in-vehicle assistants, so those interactions are more natural and helpful. This is just the beginning of how agentic capabilities can transform the automotive industry.”
The partnership ensures that users remain within the Mercedes-Benz digital ecosystem, primarily through the Mercedes me app, without needing to sign into Google accounts for generative AI features. The integration promises a smooth user experience, accessible via the classic “Hey, Mercedes” wake word or through physical controls such as the touchscreen or steering wheel.
Exclusive features for the new CLA Series
Set to debut later this year, the new Mercedes-Benz CLA series will be the first vehicle equipped with this groundbreaking navigation system, powered by the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). This AI-enhanced system is designed to handle complex queries, offering suggestions tailored to individual preferences- from quiet dining options for a milestone celebration to family-friendly restaurants with kid-friendly menus.
While this integration follows the introduction of ChatGPT via Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service into the MBUX system, it marks a significant step forward by focusing on navigation and point-of-interest searches. The AI agent’s capability to understand context, retain conversational memory, and handle multi-turn dialogue sets it apart from traditional voice assistants.
With the launch of the CLA series and plans for further rollouts, Mercedes-Benz continues to lead the charge in integrating cutting-edge technology into the driving experience – proving that the future of mobility is not just about getting from A to B, but about enhancing every step of the journey. As Mercedes-Benz blazes this trail, competitors are sure to follow, further advancing AI-driven automotive technology.
