The premium SUV market has a new heavyweight contender. Mercedes-AMG has pulled the wraps off the updated GLC 53 4MATIC+, a vehicle that swaps out its predecessor’s manners for a sharper, more aggressive personality. Available as both a standard SUV and a sleek Coupé, this latest model focuses on raw driving enjoyment and a highly specific aesthetic that distinguishes it from the standard Mercedes-Benz line-up.

More power and faster response

At the heart of the GLC 53 sits a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine. The engineers in Affalterbach have heavily reworked the internals. It features a new cylinder head with better intake and exhaust ports, alongside a beefier intake system. Thanks to a twin-charging setup using both an exhaust gas turbocharger and an improved electric auxiliary compressor, the engine is exceptionally reactive.

The numbers are significant. The unit produces 330 kW (449 hp) and 600 Nm of torque. If you need a quick burst of speed, an overboost function kicks in for 10 seconds, pushing torque up to 640 Nm. This allows the SUV to hit 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds when using the Race Start mode. To keep things efficient during normal driving, a second-generation integrated starter-generator provides a 48-volt mild-hybrid boost, adding an extra 17 kW of power when pulling away.

Precision handling and the introduction of Drift Mode

For the first time in an AMG SUV, drivers can access a dedicated Drift Mode. This is made possible by the fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system and a new electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential. When you want to push the limits on a closed track, the system can send all the power to the rear wheels, turning this practical family hauler into a rear-wheel-drive machine.

The chassis relies on AMG Ride Control steel suspension with adaptive damping. You can toggle between Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes to change how the car reacts to the road. It also comes standard with rear-axle steering. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn opposite to the front to make parking easier; at high speeds, they turn in the same direction to keep the car stable during quick lane changes.

Exterior drama and the Golden Accents Package

Visually, the GLC 53 demands attention. For the first year of production, Mercedes is offering a “Golden Accents Package.” This limited-run look pairs either Obsidian Black or Graphite Grey paint with “techgold” details. This gold finish appears on the rim flanges of the 21-inch matte black forged wheels and along the car’s flanks.

If you prefer a darker look, the Night Packages swap out chrome for high-gloss black on the mirrors, trim strips, and exhaust tips. The AMG Design Plus Package adds even more aero-focused parts, including a larger front splitter, extra flics on the bumper, and a more prominent spoiler lip on the roof or tailgate.

A driver-focused cabin

Inside, the racing influence is obvious. The Golden Accents Package brings black leather sports seats with stitching that matches the gold exterior highlights. The dashboard and door panels also get this contrast stitching, while the carbon fibre trim is woven with metallic threads to catch the light.

The driver holds an AMG Performance steering wheel wrapped in Microcut microfibre, featuring integrated buttons to swap driving modes without taking your hands off the rim. Even the floor mats and door sills are bespoke, with the latter featuring an illuminated AMG logo and a unique pattern.

The new Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ is a clear move towards a more emotive, mechanical driving experience. It is a machine for those who need the space of an SUV but refuse to give up the thrill of a genuine performance car.
