Inspired by the Magician’s rope prop, designer Hanqi Jia created a furniture concept shaped by a single metal line that bends into a load-bearing structure. A compact, seamless furniture piece can easily transform from a dining table to a workspace or a sidetable residing by a sofa. In today’s world where home and work have never been more intertwined, traditional furniture struggles to respond to the growing demand for functionality. But the Magician’s rope overcomes these issues- just like magic.
Just like magic
Magician’s rope desk is designed for people who work from home, but still want to maintain that homely feeling. Instead of adding traditional office furniture, too rigid and visually heavy for today’s living spaces, Magician’s rope provides a light, refined solution. Made of transparent material and a continuous red metal line that bends to form a frame, the table is supported through minimal contact. By replacing conventional legs and joints with an uninterrupted red line, the designer shapes both the structure and visual identity of the piece.

Just like the soft, hollow magician’s rope, the table also appears firm at first glance, but remains light and flexible, making the use easier and more magical. The sense of suspension is further emphasised by the form that appears almost drawn rather than built. Just like a drawing, a metal red line bends, loops and crosses itself into the supporting structure, which embodies strength without insisting on it. By adapting to different conditions throughout the day, the desk supports both focused work and casual use.
Blends naturally into its surroundings
The transparent tabletop reduces visual weight by allowing the passage of light. The Magician’s Rope’s transparent quality significantly reduces the desk’s visual impact, making it perfect for tiny apartments or a home office located in a small corner of the room. Magician’s Rope desk addresses a newly established tension between the office and home environment that more and more frequently merge into one. In a time when plenty of furniture refuses to adapt, the desk by Hanqi Jia from the Savannah College of Art and Design bridges that gap to offer a table that can be used in a multitude of ways, but defies categorisation. A home office desk, a dining table, a coffee table, a side table, the fluid form of Magician’s Rope can become all of the above while at the same time offering an ephemeral form that appears more as an illusion, a silhouette of a table than a table itself.
