IKEA is back with its third MÄVINN collection, continuing a project that connects its global reach with the personal touch of handcraft. This new range is a direct result of the brand’s long-standing work with social enterprises, a partnership that has been creating job opportunities in various communities since 2012. The 2025 collection, featuring 18 handmade items, shines a light on traditional skills and the creative spirit of artisans, offering pieces that carry real stories into our homes.

A partnership in design

The creation of the MÄVINN collection is a conversation between IKEA’s designers and skilled artisans from five countries: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Jordan, and Thailand. Rather than simply handing over a blueprint, the process is a give-and-take. IKEA designer Maria Vinka describes it as a true collaboration.

“I love working with the MÄVINN collections since all the creating occurs in collaboration with skilled social businesses and artisans. They bring in their craft, and we amplify their work and bring it to the customer. It’s a continuous dialogue.”

This approach ensures that the final products, from baskets to rugs, are not just beautiful objects, but are also filled with the heritage and expertise of the people who made them. Each item is a piece of a bigger story about shared creation.

Celebrating natural materials

At the core of the MÄVINN look and feel are the materials themselves. The collection makes extensive use of natural, renewable fibers like banana bark, jute, and palm leaves. These materials are chosen for their connection to the local environments of the artisans. The raw, tactile quality of these fibers introduces a sense of warmth and authenticity into a living space. “Natural materials are full of lessons. They evolve with time, just like the hands that shape them,” says Vinka. This focus on organic textures means each product has a unique character that reflects its handmade origin and the environment it came from.

Made for gathering

This year’s collection centers on the theme of table setting. The items are designed to encourage people to come together and share a meal, reinforcing the idea of community that is so central to the MÄVINN project. The collection offers a chance to set a table with pieces that have meaning. Every lampshade or rug is a result of this collaborative spirit, connecting the customer not just to a product, but to the person who crafted it. This focus on gathering makes the collection about more than just decoration; it’s about creating spaces for connection.

A deeper impact

Beyond the design, the MÄVINN collection is about creating positive change. The social businesses IKEA partners with often operate in rural areas facing economic and environmental difficulties. For the artisans, this project provides more than just income; it helps them build financial independence and improve their standing in their communities. Magnus Nord, the Implementation Leader for Social Entrepreneurship at IKEA, sees the effect as a ripple in water.

“MÄVINN is about empowering positive change for the artisans and their communities, like a stone creating ripples in water, the impact of it resonates far beyond the surface. When you choose these pieces, you’re investing in someone’s ability to build a future.”

By bringing a MÄVINN product home, customers are supporting this journey and helping to build a more inclusive society.

The MÄVINN collection will be available in IKEA stores globally and online starting in July 2025. Looking ahead, IKEA plans to release a new edition every six months, with the next one scheduled for January 2026, continuing its commitment to turning craftsmanship into opportunity.
