Standing atop a cliff overlooking Mexico’s Pacific coast, in a pristine 3,000-acre private nature reserve in Jalisco, Mexico, the Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo is more than just a luxury retreat. It’s a masterpiece of design that pays homage to Mexico’s rich heritage while harmonizing with its breathtaking surroundings.
The Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo results from an extraordinary collaboration between some of Mexico’s most celebrated architects and designers. The architectural vision was led by LegoRocha, a partnership between Victor Legorreta and Mauricio Rocha, while the interior design was entrusted to Uribe Krayer and Estudio Esterlina, led by Ofelia Uribe, Erica Krayer, and Esterlina Campuzano. Together, they have created a resort that offers a perfect combination of contemporary luxury and cultural authenticity.
The design team’s primary goal was to create a deeply rooted space in its environment. With only two percent of the expansive nature reserve developed, the resort’s architecture and interiors are designed to “camouflage” into the landscape. Every detail, from the use of local stone and wood to the custom cement color that mimics the sandy beaches, was chosen to respect the natural surroundings and evoke a sense of timelessness.
Authentically Mexican interiors
The interiors of the Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo celebrate Mexico’s diverse cultural heritage. Drawing inspiration from pre-Hispanic traditions, colonial influences, and contemporary design, the spaces are infused with character and authenticity. Rooms and common areas feature handcrafted furnishings, artisanal textiles, and locally sourced materials that reflect the rich tapestry of Mexico’s artistic traditions.
Collaborations with non-profit organizations like Ensamble Artesano and Taller Maya have ensured that the resort showcases and supports Mexican artisans. These handcrafted elements surround guests; from tableware and artwork to textiles and furniture, offering an immersive experience of Mexico’s craftsmanship.
“Our vision was to build a modern Mexican resort and make it a testimonial of our country’s rich heritage,” says Pedro Verea Hernandez, CEO of Paralelo 19, the resort’s developer.
Designing with nature in mind
The resort’s design goes beyond aesthetics; it integrates with the environment to create a sense of harmony. The architecture’s fluidity mirrors the undulating topography of the peninsula, with structures carefully positioned to preserve natural features and offer panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Interior spaces seamlessly transition to outdoor terraces and gardens, blurring the lines between the built environment and the lush natural reserve.
Materials were chosen not only for their beauty but also for their durability in the coastal environment. Local stone, lava rock, and sustainably sourced wood dominate the design palette, creating a tactile connection to the land. These elements and contemporary design sensibilities give the resort a timeless yet distinctly regional character.
An award-winning experience
Receiving the award for Best Interior Design Resort – Luxury at the LIV Hospitality Design Awards underscores the team’s success in crafting a destination that balances sophistication with authenticity. The resort’s design invites guests to explore Mexico’s cultural and natural richness, from the curated artisanal details to guided hikes through its diverse ecosystems.
