The latest winner of the “Cabinet” category at the SIT Furniture Design Awards is not one, but three bar cabinets: Touch, Hedonist, and Iris, which were designed by MW Design Ltd as individual pieces with their own materials and character but as part of the same series.
Each cabinet has a different mix of cladding, solid wood, metal, and textiles, but their structures are based on the same idea: a cabinet for storing everything one needs in a home bar.
Cold surfaces are placed alongside softer ones, and metal is combined with wood rather than alone. For the designer, quality is key; that’s why all three pieces were developed using a mix of manual work and modern production methods.
The cabinets were not designed to be used; they are meant to bring some personality into their settings and fit the vibe of each person who acquires them. The names (Touch, Hedonist, and Iris) suggest a different character for each, but all three are their own design rather than variations of a single model.
For the lead designer, Andras Meszaros, these cabinets are both practical and emotional. Each different material and finish creates a unique, intimate presence within the room.
