The LEGO Group revealed its latest masterpiece: the LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set. Developed in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, this brick-built version of the iconic painting captures the artist’s signature brushstrokes and vivid colors in a whole new way.
A new way to experience Van Gogh’s masterpiece
With 2,615 pieces, the set allows fans to explore Van Gogh’s artistry while piecing together a three-dimensional version of one of his most famous works. Designed to highlight the artist’s signature use of light and shade, the set focuses on three vibrant shades of yellow, bringing the sunflowers to life with adjustable petals. It also includes a removable frame, a tile featuring Van Gogh’s signature, and a hanger element for display.
An interactive art journey
The process of building this set is akin to painting, starting with a base and gradually adding layers of details. To enhance the experience, LEGO and the Van Gogh Museum have created a podcast featuring Senior Curator Nienke Bakker and LEGO Designer Stijn Oom, available from March 1st on LEGO.com, YouTube, and Spotify. The podcast delves into the collaboration and how Van Gogh became synonymous with sunflower paintings.
Stijn Oom shared his excitement about working on such an iconic artwork, acknowledging the challenge of recreating Van Gogh’s thick, textured brushstrokes using LEGO bricks.
“One of the biggest challenges was capturing the impasto effect while keeping the painting’s asymmetrical but balanced composition. We are incredibly proud of the result and hope fans enjoy building it as much as we enjoyed designing it.”
Rob Groot, Managing Director of the Van Gogh Museum, also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing how this LEGO set brings Van Gogh’s work to new audiences.
“It was incredible to see LEGO designers and our museum experts working together so closely. We hope this set sparks curiosity and appreciation for Van Gogh’s art and life story.”
Special events and installations
To mark the launch on March 1st, LEGO has created two large-scale replicas of the painting, which will be permanently displayed at the LEGO Store in Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum.
Fans in Amsterdam and Marseille can meet LEGO designer Stijn Oom and get their sets signed at LEGO Stores on March 1st and 2nd. Additional events are planned throughout the year, including a special LEGO installation at the Van Gogh Museum from June to August 2025, which will later travel to LEGO House Billund and LEGO World Utrecht. A virtual tour will also be made available for fans worldwide.
The legacy of Van Gogh’s sunflowers
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the largest collection of Van Gogh’s works, holds this version of Sunflowers as one of its most treasured pieces. The painting, created in 1889 during Van Gogh’s time in Arles, France, captures his fascination with color, nature, and the symbolic meaning of sunflowers.
How to get the set
To celebrate the launch, select LEGO Stores across AMS and EMEA will host a Sunflowers-themed Make and Take event from March 1st to 8th and again in March 2025. The LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is available for pre-order from January 28th, 2025, at www.LEGO.com/Sunflowers and in LEGO Stores.
