Bentley Torcal: The First Bentley with a Fully Electric Powertrain

Heading: Bentley

Bentley unveiled Bentley Torcal, a sleek SUV with a low silhouette and a bold design language. Conceived by Robin Page and the in-house design team at Crawe, the design is based on four “reads“.

  • The first read is proportion achieved through a long wheelbase, generous frontal aspect and short overhangs. The design principle of “upright elegance” is combined with the “endless bonnet” principle that highlights the length and presence of the car.
  • The second read is the graphic elements that establish identity. Reminiscent of the iconic Continental T, the new car features advanced lighting technology and an illuminated diamond grille. The rear is embellished with Bentley’s prestigious shield, the design principle originally introduced with the EXP 15 Concept Car.
  • The third read is surface language, which reduces unnecessary lines, allowing proportions and surfaces to shape the car. The cabin tapers towards the rear, creating the notion of strength and energy described as a “resting beast“.
  • Finally, the fourth read is details, embodied in a diamond pattern spanning throughout the design, whether clearly expressed or abstracted into the surface.

Bentley wings create symmetry and balance on the dashboard, made of premium materials such as leather, veneer, wool and aluminium. Knurled controls celebrate the fusion of craft and technology. Physical controls are positioned close to the steering wheel and centre console for easier reach. The standard seats include 16-way adjustment, ventilation, heating, bolsters and a new massage function.

Postural Adjust and the Smart Seat Climate system improve comfort, adjust pressure distribution and provide heating and ventilation for temperature control. The Wellness Seat specification supports legs, back and shoulders. This is the first Bentley to introduce a power fold system at the back seats. The core car comes with a 21” wheel as standard, while the S model features a ten-twin-spoke 22” design as standard.

Power and battery

Bentley Torcal is the first car with a fully electric powertrain delivering up to 888 PS and the highest torque ever made, 1,350 Nm. Torcal can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds (0-100 km/h in 2.9 secs). Permanent magnet synchronous motors are filled with oil for life. Equipped with a 192-cell lithium-ion pouch battery running at 800V nominal, with a total net capacity of 113 kWh, the car can be charged from 10-80% in just under 20 minutes at 400 kW. Another novelty is a fully active suspension, paired with an adaptive two-valve damper that can be raised and lowered independently. Electronic All-Wheel Steering increases the agility of the car further. Iron braking system with 420 mm front discs and 370 mm rears, comes with black, red or grey callipers and can be upgraded to a Carbon Silicon Carbide (CSiC) ceramic system with larger discs.

The shortest four-door in the line-up is 5 metres long with a 460-litre boot supplemented by a 90-litre front storage area. A turning circle of 11.1 makes manoeuvring easy, while the range of up to 375 miles / 600 km makes long-distance travel effortless. Twenty-five radars, cameras and sensors provide data for easy handling, parallel parking, garage, etc. Radar-controlled doors can self-open and close, while a Frosted Diamond sunroof allows light and atmosphere adjustment.

Sound and screens

The soundscape is inspired by the Bentley V8 and uses real instruments, including drums, viola and bass guitar, to create the Bentley Dynamic Symphony. The low-frequency sound is adapted to the driver’s torque demand and speed, providing sensory feedback.  The volume increases in Sport mode, but you can also turn it off completely. Torcal also comes with two audio systems: a 620W, 16-speaker system and 1,780W, 28-speaker package.

Four Experience Modes adjust light, sound, climate and airflow to create dynamic Sport mode, cosy Comfort Mode, fresh-air-infused Refresh mode or Bentley Mode. Facial recognition adjusts seat and steering wheel position once identifying the driver. Mobile Device Key allows users to use a mobile phone as the key. Curved OLED screens and augmented reality head-up display reduce eye stray and distraction by displaying information directly into the driver’s field of view.

World’s first 100% Merino wool automotive fabric

In partnership with Fox Brothers, Bentley developed the world’s first 100% Merino wool automotive fabric in six colours. A new finish, Ombré Walnut by Mulliner, is made of 1,000 responsibly sourced walnut off-cuts and craft (recycled) paper to achieve four walnut shades. Another new finish, Sunburst Aluminium by Mulliner, features a fresh three-way brush pattern, while the interior colour palette offers a selection of 15 leather hues and 15 matching shades of dynamic. Six wood veneer options are accompanied by two technical and six Piano finishes.

The Torcal comes in two models: the core car and a sporty S version. The Torcal S features a series of visual changes, including dark rear lamps, red brake callipers, black exterior brightwork and mirror caps, piano black veneer, a rear diffuser, sports pedals, and a dedicated S colour split and stitch pattern. The Torcal core car sports satin silver brightwork and Open Pore Crown Cut Walnut.
