An Architecture Studio in Colima Built as a Space for Work and Experimentation

Header: Onnis Luque

Taller Di Frenna Arquitectos has completed its own headquarters in Colima, Mexico, a building designed to act as a physical map of the firm’s creative process. The building brings together workspaces, meeting areas, audiovisual facilities and interior courtyards within a series of clearly defined volumes. The project reflects the studio’s architectural approach through the use of exposed materials, experimentation with textures, and the integration of natural light and vegetation.

A workspace built for experimentation

The layout of the studio focuses on how a design team actually moves and talks throughout the day. Instead of cubicles, the building contains open-plan zones that encourage people to share ideas. The floor plan includes dedicated audiovisual rooms for presentations and a specific workshop for model-making, ensuring that every stage of a project has its own territory. This setup allows the team to shift easily from drawing on a screen to building a physical scale model, turning the entire office into a giant workbench for architectural research.

Exposed concrete and raw materials

Visually, the building is a collection of clear, heavy blocks that don’t hide how they were made. The studio chose a palette of raw materials that feel sturdy and real. Exposed concrete and dark, charred wood sit alongside tough steel frames and local stone. By leaving these materials in their natural state, the architects show off the textures of the construction process. There are no layers of plaster or paint to mask the structure; instead, the rough grain of the timber and the cool surface of the concrete provide the main visual interest. This choice isn’t just about looks but about choosing finishes that last and celebrating the actual bones of the building.

Light and gardens inside the walls

To break up the weight of the stone and concrete, the architects carved a series of courtyards into the heart of the plan. These outdoor pockets bring heaps of natural light into the middle of the workspace, meaning the team rarely needs to rely on harsh overhead bulbs during the day. Trees and plants grow within these voids, offering a view of greenery from almost every desk. Other than looking good, these gardens create a sense of airflow and give staff a place to step outside for a coffee or a quick chat without leaving the building. The constant shift of light and shadow throughout the afternoon keeps the interior feeling active and connected to the weather outside.

Traditional techniques for modern problems

While the building has a modern, industrial feel, it was built using the skills of local tradespeople. Taller Di Frenna Arquitectos worked closely with builders and craftsmen from the region to pull off the specific finishes seen on the walls and joints. This partnership meant that traditional building techniques were used to solve modern design problems. You can see the human hand in the way the stone is laid and how the wood is treated, giving the studio a character that a factory-made building simply wouldn’t have. It is a structure that relies as much on manual skill as it does on digital precision.

The new Taller Di Frenna Arquitectos studio is a clear statement of what the firm values. They have created a workplace that feels open and grounded. It serves as a functional tool for their daily work while showing clients exactly how they handle light, space, and solid materials. It is a building that explains just by looking at it that this is an architecture firm.
