A Preservation-focused Renovation of a Greek House

In the heart of a quaint neighborhood stands a home affectionately known as Rock House, a sanctuary where the echoes of classic rock reverberate through its walls. Owned by avid music enthusiasts with a deep admiration for the Rolling Stones, this residence embodies the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll in its very essence. Guided by their love for music and a desire to blend the past with the present, the owners embarked on a renovation journey under the ethos of being “Rock People.”

The renovation of this 50-square-meter abode was done by Natalia Bazaiou Architecture and Research and it was not just about modernizing a space but preserving its intrinsic identity from the 1950s. The challenge lay in retaining the vintage charm while accommodating contemporary needs, such as additional living spaces and architectural enhancements. Thus, the transformation began with a delicate balance of nostalgia and innovation.

One striking addition to Rock House is the exterior staircase leading to the roof—a crimson structure that symbolizes both strength and dialogue with the existing stone building. This lightweight yet bold feature not only offers access to panoramic views but also seamlessly integrates with the original structure, enhancing rather than overpowering its character.

Inside, a partition wall separating the kitchen from the main entrance serves a dual purpose. Inspired by traditional Greek architecture, it not only defines spaces but also acts as a canvas for showcasing eclectic objects and setting various moods through creative lighting.

The challenge of limited square footage spurred ingenious solutions. The bedroom area, once confined to sleeping quarters, now multitasks as a living room with ample space for dining and relaxation. Exposed stone walls, reminiscent of the home’s past, blend harmoniously with built-in niches for storage and display.

Preservation was paramount in the redesign, leading to the thoughtful refurbishment of existing exterior doors with contemporary touches. A vibrant red finish establishes a visual dialogue with the staircase, further unifying the design elements.

Architect Natalia Bazaiou and construction expert Thanassis Fotou collaborated seamlessly to bring the vision of Rock House to life. It’s not merely a residence but a symphony of nostalgia and innovation—a space where the past dances with the present, creating an enduring harmony for generations to come.
